When to go

Are you planning your trip to Oran and unsure which month to choose? Summer for the beach, spring for mild weather, autumn to avoid crowds. You're looking for concrete information, not a copy-pasted encyclopedia entry.

Oran enjoys a privileged Mediterranean climate: sunny all year round, mild winters, hot but bearable summers near the coast, and over 300 days of sunshine per year. Beyond this general observation, each month has its own personality. The sea in May is not the same temperature as in August, and September beaches are nothing like those in July.

The short answer

The two best months for Oran are May and September. Temperatures between 24 and 29 °C, sea at 18 °C in May and 24 °C in September, almost empty beaches, and prices much lower than in July and August. July and August offer the warmest sea, 24 to 25 °C, but with the saturation of peak season.

Oran's climate in brief

Oran enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, softened by its bay and proximity to the sea. Temperatures are rarely extreme: they rarely drop below 8 °C in winter, and summer remains bearable near the coast thanks to the sea breeze. There are over 300 days of sunshine per year. Rain falls mainly between November and March, never in massive quantities. The sun is almost always present.

A detail to note: temperatures vary significantly between the coastal fringe—Aïn El Turck, Bousfer, Les Andalouses—and inland Oran. In mid-summer, there can be a 5 to 7 degree difference between Bir El Djir, which is hotter, and Bousfer, which is cooled by the breeze. This is a factor to consider when choosing your accommodation in Oran depending on the season.

Winter in Oran: December, January, February

The atmosphere

Oran's winter is mild. You'll wear a sweater, sometimes a jacket, but not a heavy winter coat like in France. Sunny days are numerous even in the middle of January. The sun still beats down at noon, and it's easy to have coffee on a terrace.

The rain

Winter is the rainy season in Oran, but rainfall is intermittent. You might have three days of rain followed by ten days of sunshine. Never long grey weeks like in Belgium or northern France.

Who it's suitable for

  • Travelers who want to completely avoid crowds
  • Diaspora returning for religious holidays, depending on the Hijri calendar
  • Cultural visits, walks, and gastronomy without the scorching sun
  • Business travelers who want a city that operates normally
  • Buyers visiting properties, in peace, without the summer rush

The limitations

No swimming: the sea is 14 to 17 °C, which is cold. Some water activities operate only on request. Evenings are cool, so bring a jacket for going out.

Spring in Oran: March, April, May

The atmosphere

Spring is one of the most beautiful seasons in Oran. Mild temperatures, 20 to 25 °C during the day, abundant sunshine, nature turning green again, flowers everywhere. The city is beautiful, the coast is splendid, and the air is fresh and clean.

Who it's suitable for

  • Couples on a getaway
  • Families who want to visit the city and coast without the summer heat
  • Hikers: Santa Cruz, M'sila forest, Murdjadjo mountain
  • Photographers: Oran's spring light is magnificent
  • Budget-conscious travelers, as prices are significantly lower than in summer

The limitations

The sea remains cool until the end of May, 16 to 18 °C. You can dip your feet, but proper swimming is still limited. May is more promising, especially in its second half.

💡 Karim's advice

Honestly, May and September are Oran's two magical months that no one recommends enough. Sun, perfect temperatures, good sea, almost empty beaches, soft prices, relaxed neighborhood life. Wallah, that's what we recommend to all couples and families who can choose their dates. July and August are for those who have no choice due to school.

Summer in Oran: June, July, August

The atmosphere

Summer is the absolute high season. Guaranteed sunshine every day, a festive summer atmosphere everywhere. June remains relatively mild, around 28 °C during the day. July and August are hot, 31 to 32 °C on average, sometimes more with the sirocco. Near the sea, it's generally bearable thanks to the breeze. In inland Oran, the hottest hours, from 1 PM to 5 PM, require good air conditioning.

Who it's suitable for

  • Families with school-aged children, constrained by school holidays
  • Diaspora returning home: the peak is July and August
  • Fans of water activities in Oran: diving at Île Plane, jet-skiing at Cap Falcon, kayaking at Krystel beach
  • Weddings and family events

The limitations

It's saturated. Crowded beaches on weekends, full restaurants, highest prices of the year for accommodation and activities, traffic jams in Aïn El Turck. If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is not the time.

Our advice for summer

  • Accommodation with a private pool, like our Villa Sakina in Bousfer, to escape the crowds on public beaches
  • Air conditioning in every room, non-negotiable
  • Book three to four months in advance for the most popular properties
  • Go to the beaches early in the morning or late in the afternoon

Autumn in Oran: September, October, November

The atmosphere

Autumn, especially September, is one of the best seasons in Oran. The summer heat gradually subsides, the sea remains warm—24 °C in September and still 22 °C in October—beaches empty out, and the city returns to its normal rhythm after the summer rush.

Who it's suitable for

  • September: our favorite season in Oran. Everything is still open, the sea is warm, the crowds have disappeared, and prices come down.
  • October: ideal for combining beach time, still possible, with cultural visits.
  • November: off-season, total calm, perfect for a business trip or property visits.

The limitations

From late October, swimming becomes marginal. Some water activities slow down in November.

Sea temperature month by month

For swimming enthusiasts, here are the concrete details.

  • January and February: 14 to 15 °C, cold, very unpleasant for swimming except for seasoned athletes
  • March and April: 15 to 16 °C, still cool, short swims tolerable
  • May: 18 °C, you can swim from mid-May
  • June: 21 °C, very pleasant, ideal start to the season
  • July: 24 °C, perfect
  • August: 25 °C, the warmest sea of the year
  • September: 24 °C, still perfect, with calm beaches
  • October: 22 °C, still pleasant, especially at the beginning of the month
  • November: 19 °C, cool but possible for the brave
  • December: 17 °C, end of swimming season

The best period for swimming is from late May to early October. The absolute peak: July, August, and September.

When to visit based on your profile

Beach, sun, and festive atmosphere

July, August, early September. This is the complete Algerian summer experience, with the accompanying crowds.

Beach, calm, and gentle prices

May, late June, September, October. The best compromise for travelers who can choose their dates.

Cultural visits and mild climate

April, May, October, November. Perfect temperatures for walking, visiting Santa Cruz, the historic center, and hiking. A private driver in Oran allows you to visit several sites in one day.

Business or property visits

Any time except July and August, which are too saturated. October, November, March, and April are ideal: the city operates normally, and appointments are easily scheduled. Useful if you are preparing a property purchase in Oran from France.

Hijra or returning home

Avoid July and August for moving: too hot, saturated services, high prices. Opt for March to May or September and October for a serene settling in Oran.

Coming from France, Belgium, or Canada

If your dates are dictated by school holidays, you will travel in July or August like most of the diaspora, and the challenge becomes anticipation rather than choosing the month. Three things to remember from Paris, Lyon, Brussels, or Montreal.

  • Book three to four months in advance for summer: accommodation, vehicle, and transfers all depart around the same period.
  • If you are flexible, shift your dates by a fortnight. Going the last week of August instead of the first radically changes the crowd levels, for an identical sea.
  • Consider September for retirees and couples without school-aged children. It offers the best comfort-to-calm ratio of the year.
