What to do in Oran? 30 must-do activities (tested by locals)
Arriving in Oran next week and looking for things to do? Let's be direct: most of the lists you'll read on Google are written by people who don't even know Wahran. We live here. Some of us grew up here, others returned.
This list comes from firsthand experience, not a copy-paste from Tripadvisor.
We've personally tested these 30 activities, with our children, parents, and cousins visiting from France in the summer. Some are definitely worth seeing. Others are overrated, and we'll tell you frankly. The idea is for you to leave with a real plan — not a brochure. Whether you're diaspora returning home, a Gulf tourist, an Algerian family on a weekend trip, or a couple on a getaway, you'll find plenty to intelligently fill your stay.
Mrahba bikoum in Oran. Let's go.

Oran's beaches: let's start there
Because let's be honest. If you come to Oran and don't swim, you've missed out on your trip. The Oranese coast has 70 kilometers of beaches. Not all of them are equal.
1. Les Andalouses — the reliable choice
Fine sand, clear water, decent facilities. This is the family beach. You can rent a parasol, eat on site, and children can safely splash around. The only drawback: in July-August, it's packed. You need to be there before 10 AM or after 5 PM to breathe.
Tip: the western side of the beach is less crowded than the eastern side.
2. Madagh — for those who want something wild
30 minutes from Aïn El Turck. A small cove bordered by ochre cliffs. The water is turquoise, clear, and seaweed-free. No sun loungers, no snack bar. You bring your cooler, your parasol, and enjoy. It's our favorite beach for family picnics.
3. Bomo Beach — the chill option
More chic, calmer. Ideal if you want a sun lounger, a cool drink, and zero stress. The value for money is good.
4. Cap Blanc — for fishermen and contemplatives
A lighthouse, white cliffs, breathtaking views. Not really a swimming beach — water access is rocky — but for a sunset stroll, it's unbeatable.
5. Cristal — the most famous, the most overrated
We dare to say it. Cristal Beach built its reputation 15 years ago. Today, it's crowded, sometimes dirty, and the water isn't always great. Unless you reserve a private space, we recommend going elsewhere.
💡 Karim's advice
Honestly, if you want to enjoy a quiet family beach day, forget public beaches on a busy July weekend. Instead, rent a villa with a private pool in Bousfer. For the price of food-drinks-parking-stress, you'll have peace all day. And your children can swim without you having to watch 50 strangers.
Sea activities: where Oran truly shines
The sea in Oran isn't just for sunbathing. A real range of nautical activities has developed in recent years. And many people miss out because they don't know it exists.
6. Introductory dive at Île Plane
Île Plane is a 20-minute boat ride from Bousfer port. The water is crystal clear, you can see fish, sometimes octopuses, and starfish. The introductory dive is accessible from 8 years old, supervised by certified instructors. Photos and videos are included.
This is one of the activities we recommend most. You get out of the water and think: "How could I have lived without knowing this existed 20 minutes from my home?" Book here.
7. Blue sea safari
Three hours on a private boat. Bousfer → Paloma Island → Ants Island → Cap Blanc → Madragh coves. You can swim in coves only accessible by sea. Paella option on board. It's 40,000 DA for the boat (up to 8 people). Divided, that's a few thousand dinars per person. Well justified.
8. Excursion to the Habibas Islands
Algeria's only marine nature reserve. It's further (1h30 by boat), so it's a full-day trip. The water there is a blue you won't see anywhere else on the coast. A must-do at least once in a lifetime.
9. Jet ski and sea kayaking
For thrills, jet-skiing. For a calm experience, kayaking. Both can be rented from Bousfer or Aïn El Turck.
10. Private boat / yacht for the day
For groups, birthdays, weddings. We arrange this custom-made.
| Sea Activity | Duration | From | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diving at Île Plane | 2h | 2,000 DA | Families, beginners |
| Blue safari | 3h | 40,000 DA / boat | Groups, couples |
| Habibas Islands | Full day | Upon quotation | Adventurers |
| Sea kayaking | 2h | Variable | Couples, teenagers |
Nature and adventure: leaving the seaside
Oran isn't just about the coast. When you gain altitude, you discover forests, mountains, and landscapes that you wouldn't expect. Many tourists miss this.
11. Quad biking in M'sila Forest
Our favorite activity. You set off in a convoy of quads through the forest, cross trails, climb a ridge, and then you have the sea below and the forest behind you. The guides are serious, the machines are new. Four slots per day. The sunset option is magical. From 6,000 DA.
We discuss it in more detail on the dedicated page.
12. Horseback riding in Les Andalouses
You have several options: beach, mountains (300m altitude), a 2-in-1 circuit, or a 5-hour bivouac in the forest. Supervised by a groom who knows his animals and the terrain. From 4,000 DA, up to 15,000 DA for the full bivouac.
13. Tandem paragliding at Mount Murdjadjo
This is what everyone has been looking for since they saw the videos on TikTok. Take off from Mount Murdjadjo (530m), land on the beach. Views of the entire bay. Thrills guaranteed. Do it on a day without strong winds — it often gets canceled.
14. Hiking in Santa Cruz
You can walk up to Santa Cruz fort via the trails. Allow 1 hour of walking; it's physical but not insurmountable. The reward is the 360° view of Oran, the bay, and the Notre-Dame du Salut chapel.
15. M'sila Forest on foot
For those who enjoy peaceful walks. Several marked trails, perfect for a family hike in winter or spring.
Heritage and culture: understanding Oran before enjoying it
Let's be honest. Oran isn't Marrakech or Istanbul in terms of tourist heritage. But there are still some real gems, provided you know where to look.
16. Santa Cruz Fort
Built by the Spanish in the 16th century, perched at 392m. It is THE symbol of Oran. You can drive up by road. Visit the ramparts, panoramic views, and right next door, the Notre-Dame du Salut chapel. Allow 2 hours on site.
17. Place du 1er Novembre
Formerly Place d'Armes. Regional theater, city hall, statue, fountain. This is the historic heart. Best visited at the end of the day when the light is beautiful.
18. The Sidi El Houari district
Ottoman and Spanish Oran. Narrow streets, old buildings, Pasha's mosque. It's a bit run down, many buildings could use renovation, but the soul is there. Visit with someone who knows the area, otherwise you'll miss out.
19. The Great Synagogue (now Abdellah Ben Salam Mosque)
A testament to Oran's multicultural history. Remarkable architecture.
20. The Ahmed Zabana Museum
Fine arts, ethnography, natural history. Not huge but well maintained. A good option for a rainy or very hot day.
Family outings with children
Traveling with little ones? Here's what really works.
21. Les Sablettes / Waterfront
The developed promenade along the corniche. Playgrounds, carousels, walking. Ideal at the end of the day when it's cooler.
22. Murdjajo Park
Amusement park. Not Disney, we understand. But for children up to 10-12 years old, it's enough for a good half-day.
23. The zoo / animal park
Modest but decent. Good option for keeping the little ones busy.
24. Aquaparks in summer
Several aquaparks open during the summer season. Inquire about "family" or "women & children" session times if you're looking for more privacy.
25. A villa day with a pool
Our preferred option for families. You rent a villa for the day or weekend, the children swim safely, you cook, you relax. Our selection of villas with pools.
Where to eat in Oran: the genuinely good spots
Well. Oranese gastronomy deserves an entire article. Here we just give you the essentials.
For traditional cuisine: look for family restaurants around M'dina J'dida. Couscous, chorba, tajine. Authentic.
Grilled fish: Aïn El Turck and Bousfer. Seaside restaurants serve fresh daily sea bream, sardines, and calamari. Bessahtek.
Karantita: Oranese specialty. Baked chickpea cake. Look for it in the historic city center.
Pastries: makrout, kalb el louz, baklava. Our Oran pastries rival those of Algiers.
Modern cafes: Akid Lotfi, Canastel, Bir El Djir. Coffee shops with a contemporary atmosphere.
Shopping and markets
26. The central market
For spices, dried fruits, olives, local cheeses.
27. M'dina J'dida
The traditional shopping district. Fabrics, clothes, household goods. Not to be visited on Friday (prayer day, many close).
28. Modern shopping centers
For international brands and air-conditioned comfort: Carrefour, Sentia, City. Convenient in summer.
What to do in Oran at night
29. Promenade along the Sablettes waterfront
Free, pleasant family activity. The cool evening air, the lighting, the atmosphere.
30. Dinner with a view
Several elevated restaurants with bay views. Relaxed atmosphere, open late in summer.
Excursions around Oran (bonus)
If you have 4-5 days, leave the city for a day or two.
Tlemcen: 2h30 drive. The city of the Almoravids. Mansourah Mosque, Mechouar Palace, Sidi Boumediène tomb. A real cultural shock.
Mostaganem: 1h30. Quieter beaches, less crowded than Oran.
Aïn Témouchent / Beni Saf: wild coast, fishermen, coves.
For these excursions, a vehicle is essential. Our fleet is here, or if you prefer not to drive, we can arrange a private driver.
Practical tips before visiting Oran
When to visit? May-June and September-October are the best seasons. July-August, it's hot and crowded. Winter is mild but the sea is cold.
How to get around? A car is essential. Shared taxis exist but are not very practical for sightseeing. Renting a car at the airport remains the simplest solution.
Money: exchange your euros on the parallel market, not at the bank. The rate is significantly better. But have a local accompany you the first time.
Safety: Oran is a safe city. The usual precautions for a big city are sufficient.
Language: Dialectal Arabic and French. You'll get by with French everywhere.
Accommodation: city center hotels are aging. Rental apartments and villas often offer better value for money. Our selection here.

💬 Contact us on WhatsAppFAQ — Your questions about Oran
Q: How many days are needed to visit Oran?
Three full days are enough to see the essentials: Santa Cruz, a beach, a sea activity, the historic center. Five days allow you to add an excursion (Tlemcen or Habibas Islands) and take your time.
Q: What is the best beach in Oran?
It all depends on what you're looking for. Les Andalouses for convenience, Madagh for its wild nature, Bomo for comfort. Avoid the overcrowded Cristal Beach and Aïn El Turck center on summer Saturdays.
Q: What to do in Oran when it rains?
Visit the Ahmed Zabana museum, stroll through the shopping centers, go to a traditional hammam, or visit covered restaurants in Sidi El Houari. You can also go up to Santa Cruz: on a cloudy day, the atmosphere is different but beautiful.
Q: What to do in Oran with children?
Andalouses beach, Murdjajo amusement park, stroll along Les Sablettes, first scuba dive at Île Plane (from 8 years old), villa with private pool for safety, supervised horseback riding.
Q: Are there any halal activities in Oran?
Almost all activities in Oran are compatible by default: halal restaurants everywhere (except rare, clearly indicated exceptions), mosques in all neighborhoods, family-friendly beaches, privacy-respecting accommodations. No worries for a compliant stay.
Q: What budget should I plan for 5 days in Oran?
For two people in a mid-range category: 80,000 to 150,000 DA excluding airfare (accommodation + car + meals + 2-3 activities). You can spend less or much more depending on your standards.
Q: Should I rent a car to visit Oran?
Yes, highly recommended. The interesting sites are scattered over 60 km of coastline. Without a car, you'll miss 70% of the good spots. Car rental at the airport is the most convenient option.
Q: What souvenirs to bring back from Oran?
Pastries (makrout, baklava), spices (rass el hanout), dried figs, Deglet Nour dates, jujube honey from the mountains, traditional soap. Buy at the central market rather than in tourist shops.
